Sunshine Coast Beaches

The Sunshine Coast boasts over 30 pristine beaches to enjoy. From lazing in the sun to getting your adrenaline pumping with water activities, each has its own natural beauty and charm, tucked between the tropical hinterland and vast Pacific Ocean.

Cotton Tree Beach is known for its beautiful crystal clear waters on the mouth of the Maroochydore River. The area is well-maintained and safe, making it a perfect swimming beach for families with young kids and dogs are allowed too. Water sports are popular including standup paddle boarding  as well as fishing, and many people enjoy hiring a boat and sailing out to Pinchusion Island, located at the mouth of the Maroochy River.

So close to Cotton Tree with just a short beach walk around the river mouth, you’ll find Maroochy Surf Club over looking the Maroochydore Beach.  Great for families and occasionally there can be rips in the waters, so the beach is patrolled by the Maroochydore Surf Life Saving Club. It’s great for surfing though also, and the best spot is to the south at the break off Alexandra Headland. There are usually moderate to high swells with some good right-handers. The beach breaks go right up to the river mouth.

As a patrolled beach, Mooloolaba Beach is one of Australia’s safest. Because it’s north-facing, it’s sheltered from any swirling winds so locals and tourists can expect close to perfect conditions all year long. A picnic on the beach is a popular choice, thanks to the trawlers’ deliveries of swordfish, prawns and lobsters.

Coolum Beach is a favourite among surfers and bodyboarders due to its consistent waves and glassy waters, and surfing lessons are also offered to those young and old alike. Also patrolled and safe for swimming, there’s also a large grassy park and skate ramp on the beachfront where kids can play while dad turns up the heat on the barbecue.

Things to see and do

The Sunshine Coast offers picturesque views from every angle, and the hinterland vistas are not to be missed. Discover the natural fauna and flora along the walking trails, and if you’re lucky, have an encounter with some of the native wildlife.

Just a short distance from the CBD, the park offers all types of trails, from those wanting just a short walk to lengthy hikes with a bus return. The Noosa Heads walk takes you through the Park, with coastal views of Noosa Main Beach. Pack a picnic to enjoy between the eucalyptus and drink in the fresh scents of the forest.

Buy a day pass and come and explore the rolling landscapes of greenery and colourful birdlife. Take your time in the exquisite rose garden or tour the grounds in a buggy. Grab a coffee and a muffin at the café or have a picnic on the expansive lawns.

The Glass House Mountains appear on the Australian National Heritage List, boasting thirteen hills that have formed due to volcanic remains. Take a tour of the Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve, known as a living museum of diverse plant and animal life. Alternatively, take a walk to the Gardners Falls and have a leisurely swim in the majestic freshwater rock pools under the waterfalls.

As a family holiday destination, the Sunshine Coast has a plethora of fun activities for kids of all ages. If you’re all beached out and looking for something a little more stimulating, there are loads of attractions within walking distance of the city centre.

Spend the day being daring at one of the country’s best theme parks, with crazy rides like the SX360, Australia’s tallest and 360-degree pendulum swing. For those a little less adventurous, there is also a carousel and ferris wheel among the thirty-plus attractions. Aussie World is one of our preferred partners where you can redeem a ‘Perk’ of a $50 gift voucher for every 3-nights when you book direct with Sunshine Coast Getaways.

Explore the creatures of the sea up close and personal, from penguin encounters to tidal touch pools. Learn about turtle rehabilitation and the conservation of our waters – or how about submerging with the sharks, if you dare?

The Australia Zoo was opened in 1970 by the parents of the late Steve Irwin. Experience different mammals like elephants and rhinos, and loads of different slithering snakes. The main attraction is watching the real-life crocodile feedings.
